Assignment One: Capturing Experience & Atmosphere through model making

In the last exercise I mentioned, I found it challenging to put something abstract into a 3D model, but the real challenge was putting my experience into a model without using colors. Colors are important for me and I think one can express a lot using colors, that’s the reason I feared not to be able to express myself using only white.

I started by brainstorming what shapes, textures, and sizes of elements to use, to describe my experience in Café Stein. I gathered material and without much thinking started to build my model. As a base I used white painted wooden pieces, they had a dominant texture and were strong enough to hold any other elements I wished to include in my model. I continued by creating a base of small white balls that were supposed to represent small elements that seem unimportant but create the main support for something big. I covered a paper box in white paper and wrapped a white thread around. This was meant to symbolize the unity of the space and safe & cozy feeling. As the last thing, I was folding paper cups and sticking them behind the white thread. Those were the outstanding elements of the space that did not follow the pattern but till greatly contributed to the atmosphere. Some of them are “fallen” down on the purpose as a symbol of a huge amount of details that might not be processed and recognized at once. My chosen interior was full of small details that I did not see at the beginning but slowly after analyzing the space they seemed more visible, some of them even possibly stayed unseen.

While doing this model I realized how important it is not to fear new things and keep your mind open. I judged my ability of creating a meaningful 3D model based on the fact that I use colors a lot but I was surprised how my creative thinking kept going as I was building the model. For the future, I would take more notes during the process itself and do sketches while making the final model.
